Sun bears grow to only about half the size of an American black bear

American black bears are highly dexterous, being capable of opening screw-top jars and manipulating door latches. They also have great physical strength; a bear weighing 120 pounds (54 kg) was observed turning flat rocks weighing 310 to 325 pounds (141 to 147 kg) by flipping them over with a single foreleg.

The Sun Bear has an overall body length of roughly 4′-5′ (1.22-1.52 m), upright standing height of 4’3”-5’3” (1.3-1.6 m), and a typical lifespan of 20-25 years in the wild or 20-30 years if protected in captivity.
Sun bears are known to be very aggressive and may attack without apparent provocation. Except for females with cubs the bears are solitary although there is a suggestion that same may form long-term monogamous relationships.
Sun Bears are endangered because poaching is the main cause of their decreasing population. Sun Bears are one of the most endangered animals in the world. There are about 2,500 left in the wild. They are related to Red Pandas and have a long snout and narrow skull which is smaller than other bears’.
Baby sun bears are extremely small and cute, which makes them a target for the exotic pet trade. Often, mother bears are killed and the baby bears are kept as pets. Keeping a sun bear as a pet is cruel, for they live a horrible life behind bars, kept in chains and cages.
Probably one of the least aggressive is the American black bear. What are some reasons why bears attack humans? Typically, you see two types of attacks on humans. One is a defensive attack, which most typically involves defending young or a food source, such as a prey carcass.
1. Grizzly Bears. Grizzly bears are by far one of the most aggressive and dangerous species of bear that you can encounter. They usually live in the northern and western regions of the US, as well as in Canada and Alaska.
Sun bears are very intelligent animals! They use complex facial movements as a form of communication, they are able to memorize where things are, and they use all of their strength, sense of smell, flexibility, and physical attributes to their utmost advantage.
Kodiak bears are the largest bears in the world. A large male can stand over 10′ tall when on his hind legs, and 5′ when on all four legs. They weigh up to 1,500 pounds. Females are about 20% smaller, and 30% lighter than males.
While their tongues may be extra-big, sun bears are actually the smallest bear species. Males grow about 5 feet long and weigh up to 150 pounds—that’s about half the size of an adult American black bear. These animals live in wooded areas of Southeast Asia. Strong and agile, sun bears are good at climbing trees.
Kodiak bears are much larger than polar bears on average, though some extremely large polar bears have proven this fact incorrect. Polar bears have white fur and long necks, while Kodiak bears have brown and shaggy fur.
Sloth bears grow 5 to 6 feet (1.5 to 2 meters) long, stand 2 to 3 feet (0.5 to 1 meters) high at the shoulder, and weigh, on average, 200 to 300 pounds (90 to 140 kilograms). Sloth bears live in a variety of dry and moist forests and in some tall grasslands, where boulders, scattered shrubs and trees provide shelter.
Their long tongues are used to reach insects in tight spaces and clean out honey from beehives. A sun bear’s tongue can be 8-10 inches long. They have long, sickle-shaped claws used for foraging and climbing trees.
Ungainly as it is, the hippopotamus is the world’s deadliest large land mammal, killing an estimated 500 people per year in Africa. Hippos are aggressive creatures, and they have very sharp teeth. And you would not want to get stuck under one; at up to 2,750kg they can crush a human to death.
In a fight between a tiger and a grizzly bear wins whoever strikes first. The tiger would win if it successfully used its powerful bite on the neck since it is very hard to get out of a tiger’s jaws. Once the bear manages to get the first swing at the tiger’s spine or legs, the fight is over.
Black bears, for instance, are usually less aggressive and more tolerant of people. They often live near human settlements, whereas grizzly bears prefer to stay away from human settlements and are often extirpated from heavily used or populated areas. Black bears are excellent climbers.
After years of studying and working closely with sun bears, I know that the sun bears love water but I did not know they can swim well, not until yesterday when Fiona posted a photo of a sun bear swam across a man-made fresh water lake in northern Peninsula Malaysia on my facebook.
These bears are notoriously larger and heavier than grizzly bears, making them the second largest bear other than polar bears. The average Kodiak grows over 1500 pounds and stands anywhere from eight to 10 feet tall. The average grizzly tends to weigh up to 1200 pounds and only stands at 5 to 8 feet tall.
Even Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest man, couldn’t outrun a steadfast grizzly or black bear at full speed. During a race in Berlin, 2009, the famous Jamaican sprinter set the world record for the fastest human foot speed ever recorded.
